BMW's X3M/X4M intake setup, while awkward at first glance, is a very well designed system in the given space available. The flow path from the filters to the turbo inlets is very direct and does not change direction as abruptly as typical OEM airbox designs. So instead of a complete redesign, we focused on improving the OEM airbox with less restrictive flow and improved temperature efficiency. We have replacement drop-in filters made from non-woven mesh that have a much higher flow rate compared to the stock paper filters. To help reduce intake air temperatures and force air into the airbox, we designed large front scoops that sit behind the grilles. The carbon creates air into the ducts and effectively restricts the intake side of the airbox. The final piece is the carbon airbox cover which, while not contributing to performance, does allow for a more audible induction sound and gives the engine compartment a much-needed aesthetic improvement.
